The percentage of voting-age citizens living in states that offer at least one option to vote before election day has increased from 40% in the 2000 general election to nearly 97% in the 2024 general election.

This data dive expands on the focus brief above and looks at the availability of early in-person voting on weekends in the 2024 general election. Of the states that will offer voters the option to vote early in person in 2024, 28 states and Washington, D.C., require statewide weekend early in-person voting. The remaining states permit weekend early in-person voting at the discretion of local officials or do not specify at the state level.
